She survived the most brutal and vicious abduction any one could imagine, and Lucy Kincaid feels that she has done pretty well putting it behind her. Now she wants to get on with her life and her career, and that means getting accepted into the FBI.
Moving east and starting up a second branch of RCK is Sean Rogan’s way of asserting his independence from his brothers. He may be the youngest, but he is more than capable of running RCK East and of standing on his own two feet without big brother looking over his shoulder.
Six years and Lucy still feels prickles of fear every time someone looks too closely at her, and for the last few months those feelings have intensified. Then, she finds out that one of her abductors has been murdered in the D.C. area, and she never even knew he was out of prison. The old fears come roaring back, but this time Lucy has someone new in her corner. Sean cannot keep his attraction or admiration of Lucy quiet any longer, but for right now she needs his support and expertise more than his heart.
The pain and suffering Lucy has experienced, as well as her work in getting rapists off the street, is something we as women can relate to. We have all had that uneasy feeling of being in a vulnerable position, whether just getting to our car in a dark parking lot or traveling alone in a strange place. Lucy’s character demands our respect, for although she still carries the fear, she never allows herself to fall victim to it. And to see Sean never downplay her concerns, or act like he is placating her, gives the reader real insight into the depth of feelings he has for Lucy.
