Eliza Farrell is a twenty-nine year old spinster. She was raised by her Aunt Celestina, and is an astrologer like her. She is desperately trying to keep her father from debtor’s prison.
Edward, Lord Hartwood is the notorious Lord Lightning. He is handsome with light blonde hair and brown eyes and is enormously wealthy. He is the one of the most infamous rakes in London.
Lord Lightning needs a mistress to claim his inheritance and Eliza’s prediction has cost him one, so he suggests that she take her place. Eliza considers herself plain and quite beneath the notice of someone like Lord Hartwood, but Edward sees something different in his little seeress and wants to explore it further.
This is an interesting story. The author has obviously done a great deal of research on astrology in that era and gives us quite a lot of interesting information on birth charts and such. I really liked the Eliza character the way that she naively but bravely set out on her adventure with Edward. There are quite a few interesting twists and turns in the plot and a quite engrossing love story. I really liked the way the author contrasted Eliza and Edward’s experiences in life and the way they handle adversity. Eliza is easy to like and admire, and I often felt a bit sorry for Edward. His mother is a real piece of work as is Eliza’s irresponsible and profligate father. I liked the Brighton setting, the fast moving plot, and the interesting twist of an astrologer heroine and recommend this book to historical romance fans bored with the same tired premises and wishing for a heroine who is not a beautiful debutante.
