Corporal Robert Leavitt fell quickly in love with Lola and married her. Already they have a growing family, yet their happiness is short lived when he leaves in 1949 for Japan.
Lark is Lola’s daughter from a previous affair. She knows who her mother is but has no idea who her father is.
As Robert lives day by day in war torn areas, he thinks constantly of Lola and their growing baby. Lark takes care of her younger brother, Termite, as he cannot walk. Robert feels a connection with his wife, one that has him knowing exactly when his son is born and that something is wrong. As Lark battles Mother Nature, she will come face to face with answers to her questions.
Lark & Termite was both fascinating and interesting, although at times I did feel a bit lost. Ms. Phillips gives us more than one world and more than one point of view. As the reader, you get to see the harshness of war, the longing one feels for loved ones, and the need to be close to their family who is waiting their safe return. You also get to see the other side of the spectrum, the wife, lover, and family who anxiously await their loved one's return. The ending is a bit of a shock, between what happens to Lola, as well as whom Lark’s real father is.
