After her husband’s death, Lady Clarissa Hartley ventures into London for a short time, leaving behind her dear Northumberland lands, in order to meet with her solicitor to finalize the details of her late husband’s estate. During her time in London, she has arranged to stay with her godmother, Marcia, the Countess of Newbury, a well respected and influential lady of the ton. Clarissa expects to have a pleasant visit with her godmother and quickly wrap up her legal matters.

But she does not plan on Lucien Deverill, the Fifth Earl of Newbury and Marcia’s son, to complicate matters. A self-professed rake who is tiring of the superficiality of the ton, Luc initially is not looking forward to the visit of an ‘unfashionable’ widow from the country, but will submit himself to be her escort out of duty. But then he meets Clarissa, and instantly falls for her.

Soon, Luc cannot assist her enough. Entranced by her beauty, strong wit and unconventional attitude, and falling for her more deeply every day, Luc positions himself as her helper and protector through the balls and social outings of the ton. But when Clarissa learns that her estate is in serious jeopardy he vows not to rest until he gets to the bottom of this mystery, and in the process, make her his.

This is a fantastic story that holds the reader captive right until the end. Lady Hartley is a strong female character who is refreshingly honest and forthcoming in her approach to upper-class Regency society. Luc is a powerful lead as well, and their progressing relationship is tender yet passionate. Elements of scandal and intrigue fill the pages, and round out this fulfilling story. A must read for Regency and sweet romance fans alike!
