Before she was Lady Isobel Hume she was simply Isobel, cherished daughter of Sir Edward Dobson, who dreamed her ideal future husband was someone strong and courageous, a fearless knight like those from the legendary Knights of the Round Table. But thirteen-year-old Isobel soon comes to realize that with a few coins in his pocket, she has been sold to the highest bidder and her hand in marriage was the prize. Nine years have passed, her hellish marriage has finally ended, and she can finally get on with living her own life the way she sees fit.
Sir Stephen Carleton knows he has a reputation with the ladies, one that fits his purpose in and out of bed. When he is asked to help his good friend with a small task of taking care of a twenty-two year old widow, Stephen figures it cannot be that hard, so he agrees but that is before he actually sees her.
When Isobel first spies Stephen, the world seems to tilt on its axis and she can actually feel her heart speed up. As the days turn into weeks, their friendship grows from teasing and taunting to a desire that is unquestionably against King Henry's wishes for her to marry for peace, not love. Try as they might, they know they must stay apart or risk quenching their thirst for each other. But as their resolve and determination to stay away is shaken, both find themselves embarking on a quest to find a man determined to assassinate King Henry, and they must use all their skills and knowledge to deter the traitors risking their lives as well as the love they find in each other's arms.
Once again Ms. Mallory opens readers' eyes to the world of King Henry V during his reign of the fifteenth century. My one and only complaint is that Isobel is supposed to be a strong woman who is an expert swordswoman, but I found her to be quite weepy and not as durable as I would have liked her to be as a heroine. Although I found Stephen to be the perfect match for her, including what her thirteen-year-old girlhood fantasy figures an ideal husband should be. One of the best factors within Knight of Pleasure is how detail-enriched the story is, bringing alive historical facts and surroundings. While the story is part of the All the King's Men Series and does have some returning characters, the reader does not have to read the first book to understand this one. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the fascinating and scintillating exchanges between Isobel and Stephen and watching as both characters grew in both love and maturity.
