It is post World War II and all the military men have come back to their jobs. Peg has been let go from her factory job. Luckily, she has been left an old Victorian mansion turned boarding house, and makes enough to keep a roof over her head. She goes on with her life, longing for something more, but knowing that her past will prevent her from having true happiness. She gave up on God long ago.
Joshua had come into town as assistant pastor to the local church. He brings to the congregation a heart for God, and his love for his daughter Samantha. While all the others in town size the widower up for their unmarried daughters, he finds himself drawn to the woman he has rented his small apartment from. Even though she keeps her distance, he cannot help but feel like they have met before.
Since they are neighbors, the contact they have with each other blossoms into longing and then into love. But Peg is scarred from her past, and she cannot trust Joshua with her heart. She knows that she is not cut out to be the wife of a minister. Joshua sets about changing her mind, but both of their pasts catch up with them and the truth comes out.
This is a sweet story about how one woman put her past behind her and learned to trust again. Anyone would feel for Peg, knowing how difficult it is to trust when you have been betrayed, especially by someone you love. Ms. Peters takes us on an emotional journey of love and healing. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the two characters learn how to lean on God, rather than themselves. A lovely story about redemption, and finding out it is never too late to love.
