Paul Hopwood is a police officer looking for a way to make some extra money. His girlfriend, Helen Weeks, is pregnant, but neither one of them is sure the baby is Paul’s. He wants to be able to support both Helen and the baby, but the secrets he is keeping are far too dangerous.
Theo Shirley is a good kid who happens to be friends with the wrong people. His main concern is taking care of his girlfriend, Javine, and their new baby boy. While Javine is willing to look the other way when it comes to bringing money into the house, it could be the one thing that will bring Theo’s gang down.
One night, Theo was taken out on an initiation into a London gang. A lady flashed her headlights at the car he was in and in revenge; Theo had to shoot at her. The lady’s car ran into a crowd at a bus stop and killed a policeman. The chain reaction has deaths occurring within Theo’s gang and not one of the thugs knows who is after them. Helen’s policewoman instincts kick in, and she discovers things about Paul she would never have imagined.
I started reading this book and found myself confused. As I read on, the confusion cleared and before I realized it, I turned the final page. I became absorbed in the story and the characters within the pages. I particularly enjoyed how all of these characters are all tied together. Each event affects the other people in some way, large or small. Mr. Billingham does a terrific job of bringing the reader into the story and onto the streets of London. If you are looking for a book full of suspense and drama, I would recommend this one. In the Dark will keep you on the edge of your seat.
