IN A HEARTBEAT

Whether it was born out of necessity or just her true nature, Kate McGann is used to taking charge. However, in the blink of an eye Kate’s world spins completely out of control, and all it takes is a single phone call.
Syracuse may not be New York City, but it is exactly where Detective Greg Cody needs to be. Leaving the city was hard and being this far away from his daughter even worse, but the move has proved to be the right one.
Kate is living the nightmare of every parent when she gets the call that Ben has suffered a traumatic brain injury, and it takes everything she has to keep it together for her son. She never envisioned herself a vengeful person, but wanting Ben’s attacker to pay is giving her something else to focus on besides Ben’s condition and her husband Eli's dissention. Cody is doing everything he can to find out who beat Ben with a baseball bat, but uncovering the truth may not give Kate the satisfaction she so clearly desires. All Cody can do is his job, but all he wants to do is hold Kate close, and make everything okay.
You cannot be a parent and not feel the absolute terror that Kate is going through, especially when an author like Rosalind Noonan is the force behind the words. As with any type of sport, there is always a downside to competitiveness. You only have to go to a Little League game to see it in action, but this is so much more. There is a cold-blooded viciousness behind Ben’s attack that will literally make your skin crawl, and the further you read the worse it gets. Why is it we think we are immune to statistics, and that somehow our lives are exempt from random horrors that curse other people? Well, here is a real eye-opener for all of us.
