Brooke Madison Burke moved back home with her young son after her soldier husband died serving the country. Although she has dated most of the single men in St. Dennis, she only goes on one date with them. Everyone thinks that almost two years after her husband, and love, died is long enough to be ready to move on with her life. But she is too busy starting her business and enjoying her son to worry too much about it.
Jesse Enright moved to St. Dennis in search of a home. Joining his estranged grandfather’s law firm was a move intended to show his grandfather he was not the man his father had been—a self serving and somewhat shady character. He is here to find the roots he has longed for.
When Brooke catches his eye, Jesse wants to be as forthright about his feelings as he has been with his grandfather. After advice from her brother makes him pause, he instead tries the slow and steady method. When she realizes she cares for him, he will let her reel him in.
Meeting familiar characters that have starred in earlier stories in this fun and fresh series was a pleasure. Stewart, yet again, crafted a mouthwatering tale of a business owner who has a gift in the kitchen, but instead of Steffie and her ice cream, this story follows a cupcake chef. Although reading Stewart’s decadent descriptions—again made me gain about five pounds in my search for tasty treats in reality—it wasn’t as romantically exciting as Almost Home. Perhaps because of the lack of conflict stopping their relationship and the tenderness that rippled across the pages of the last book, this reader was disappointed with a love story that wasn’t what I had come to expect from this author.
