High Seas Desire is a old-fashioned historical bodice ripper complete with a noble
pirate and a “We’re having sex whether you want to or not” beginning. It has been years
since I read this type of historical and High Seas Desire was a wonderful way to return
to the genre.
Mlyn Hurn’s book opens fast with Lady Lissa Stilton, the virginal heroine dreaming of
the love of her life. Lissa has returned to England to “come out” and she and our hero,
Jack Fitzpatrick, develop feelings for each other, until he disappears. They find each
other again when Jack, as the pirate “Black Jack”, kidnaps Lissa on her return to the
Caribbean island her father governs.
High Seas Desire has many of the story elements that make people enjoy historical
romances, then puts a fresh outlook on them. The numerous plot twists almost take
over the story, but High Seas Desire managed to keep me wondering what will happen
next as the story developed. I love plots that surprise the reader. Along with the
romance of Lissa and Jack, High Seas Desire is the story of a lady growing sensually
as a woman, and a spoiled young man learning what is important in his life.
One of the best parts of High Seas Desire is that Ms. Hurn wrote a story that kept its
historical theme throughout the book, and never switched into a contemporary with
1800s language. I love the few authors who are talented enough to do this well. One of
the problems with the book was Lissa being referred to as Lady Stilton at times, then
Miss Stilton, then Lady again. This, however should not be that big a distraction to most
readers.
The story line of High Seas Desire lets readers know that sequels are planned. Some
of the secondary characters that are fully developed and integral to the story should
have books coming out.
I enjoyed reading this “old school” romance with its dashing hero and kidnapped
heroine. In High Seas Desire Ms. Hurn has written a story I will keep.
