Rating: 4 Cups
Bowen Montgomery expects to find traitors and cowards within the McHugh Keep when he and his allies attack. Yet, when they gain entrance to the holding, there are but a few men, women and children left. The old laird has fled like a coward, leaving behind anyone not strong enough to be of use. In fact, the woman who greets him is not a McHugh at all, but a prisoner of Bowen’s defeated enemy.
Genevieve McInnis has no hope left when the Montgomerys and Armstrongs storm the McHugh Keep. She only wishes to be free of the prison her life has become. Kept as a plaything for the McHugh Laird’s son, Genevieve’s life has become a living hell. Now damaged and heartbroken, she wonders what kind of future she can possibly have left to live for.
Genevieve’s deep physical and emotional scars call to a deep protective instinct inside Bowen. He is drawn to her intrinsic strength until the day comes when Bowen knows he will risk all to save the lass. Not just because he loves her, but because he is willing to do whatever it takes to heal her wounded soul, even if it means giving up his own heart.
This second book in the Montgomerys and Armstrongs series is well written and engaging from the very first page. Genevieve’s past abuse is handled tastefully, though some readers may still find her traumatic past too much to handle. All in all, this is a sweet love story that will appeal to readers who love a good happily ever after.
