Growing up wealthy does not mean a life of ease. Just ask Edie Parrish. As a teenager, her parents allowed Dr. Osterman, a man with very bad intentions, to conduct "tests" on her. These tests were called cognitive enhancement tests, but the only thing they did for Edie is give her the ability to draw the future. Now, her graphic novels are selling well with her hero, Fade Shadowseeker. A hero with scars who dances through her mind.
For the last eighteen years, Kev Larsen has had no idea of who he is or where he came from. Kev was rescued from certain death by Tony Ranieri. Taken into the fold of the Ranieri family, Kev learned to speak and write again. In an attempt to save a girl, Kev went over a waterfall. The fall knocked loose some memories that, instead of giving him answers, only make him ask more questions.
After going over the waterfall, pieces of memories start to weave themselves together. Names of people who caused him pain spring forth. Names of people who refused to help him. Eighteen years before, an eleven-year-old girl named Edie Parrish was in her dad's office when Kev went looking for help. Charles Parrish has security escort Kev--burned, cut and scarred--from the building. That man left an imprint on Edie. Her graphic novel is based on this man her family tells her is a figment of her imagination. When the man approaches her at a booksigning, the weirdness only gets weirder when she discovers she has been writing not only novels about a real man but about his life. Someone, however, wants these two back in the Haven program to conduct some more experiments on. This time it could cost both of them their lives.
This is the latest novel in the McCloud brothers series by Ms. McKenna, but as someone who has not read any of the previous books, I will say that it is not essential to read the others to understand what is happening. This novel could very easily stand on its own. The author has the ability to draw the reader into the pages with intense feelings, hard core adventure, and passionate combustion. Fade to Midnight will leave you hanging on the edge with your fingernails dug in as you turn each page. The characters and their emotions are tangible. From fear to sensuality, the emotions are a character unto themselves. I highly recommend adding this book to your collection.
