It is April 2004 and Ondine has just been diagnosed with incurable leukemia. Only forty-eight, Ondine tells the story of her life as she embarks upon a personal and very candid journey of discovery and reconciliation.
Maxim is the love of her life, a difficult, possessive and secretive lover; still she manages to escape his embrace, convinced she must fight the battle ahead without encumbrances. Doctor Monique Veil is Ondine’s oncologist. An outstanding physician, Dr. Veil fights with all the weapons in her extensive arsenal to ensure her patient’s quality of life is the best it can be.
Ondine learns of her illness and reminisces about her life. Born to wealth and privilege, her childhood is almost like a fairy tale in some ways. Trained as a linguist and mathematician, her mind constantly seeks answers that are logical. Often she speaks of her corporal body as if it were another entity separate from her mind or soul.
I was captivated! Ondine is a complex, complicated person with an undeniable passion for exposing falsehood and laying bare that which is shrouded by the veneer of civilization. Her story is epic in scope as, during her travels, whether she is rambling through the streets of Paris or flying off to remote Romania, she encounters others fighting as fiercely against such foes as abject poverty and soul-rotting disease. Touching on many current-day hot-button issues including illegal immigration, health care, and elitist entitlement, this story swept me along with Ondine as she lives each day of her life. It is an often disturbing but triumphant declaration of the invincibility of the human spirit.
