Morgan Grady is an undercover police officer in Los Angeles. She is beautiful, capable and headstrong. She has a strong sense of honor and justice and is devoted to her Uncle Patrick who took care of her after the death of her parents.
Sean Reilly is a vampire. He was turned during World War II and is part of the Night Watcher organization. He still mourns the true death of his first love, Simone, and is a bit of a loner, even though he has a very good friend in Skord.
Betrayed and shot during an undercover operation, Morgan is very close to death. Her uncle calls his employers, the Night Watchers, who send Sean to turn her and train her for her new job. But there is a snag, Morgan was never consulted in any of this and is not sure she wants to live forever, or work for the Night Watchers. Only fear of what would happen to her uncle if the leaders find out about her circumstances keep her quiet. She is very attracted to Sean and him to her, but his devotion to the dead vampire, Simone, makes their relationship impossible. An ancient vampire is determined to end the Night Watchers and rule the world, and he has set his sights on Morgan and Sean.
I always look forward to reading anything written by this author, but she has really outdone herself with this opener to a new series. The characters are interesting, complicated and sexy, and the plot is a gripping combination of edge of your seat suspense and scorching love scenes. Morgan and Sean are multilayered characters with many issues to overcome before they can find love. The supporting cast is equally interesting, especially Sean’s best friend, Skord, and the enigmatic ancient, Regar. The story ends with a bit of a cliffhanger that will make it difficult to wait for the next installment of this series.
