EDGE OF SURVIVAL
Rating: 4 Cups
Cameran Young is the lead biologist for a study on the impact of a mining operation on the local Arctic Char. She has diabetes and is determined to live her life to fullest, even if it means working in a remote location where there may not always be complete medical care available.
Daniel Fox is British and a former SAS Sergeant, as well as, a helicopter pilot. He is dealing with his own inner demons. He uses alcohol and women to try and tame his demons, but this is creating additional problems for him.
When Cameran and her assistant Vikki arrive in the small Canadian town of Frenchman’s Blight, she has no idea that her life is about to change in more ways than one. When she discovers a dead body in the ladies room of a local bar, she understandably freaks out. Daniel who wants to get going and get the two women to their ship, follows her and finds her and the dead body. Unfortunately he has known the woman intimately, and knows this will cause him to be a suspect. In addition, because of his past, and the fact that he does not want anyone poking into it and dredging up his biggest shame, he hustles both Cameran and Vikki out of Frenchman’s Blight double quick before he calls the cops. This does not, unfortunately, keep his past from coming to light, nor does it keep his inner demons under wraps. Still fighting them, he both continues to drink heavily and womanize, including bedding down with the beautiful Vikki. The fact that he is very attracted to Cameran does not stop him from doing so. When he discovers that Cameran has diabetes, he cannot resist reading her the riot act, but it also deepens his feelings for her, along with his need to protect her, though he fights these feelings at every turn. At the same time Cameran suspects there is far more to Daniel than the drinking, womanizing, hard ass that he shows to the world. The more she talks to him and learns more about him and his past, the more she begins to suspect that there is a good man underneath it all. The fact that she is equally attracted to him does not stop her from initially shying away from this just as much as Daniel is doing. Meanwhile, there is a killer loose and he will do anything to prevent his being discovered, including killing Cameran to silence her. Will Daniel be able to protect Cameran? Will he deal with his inner demons once and for all and man up and stop the drinking and womanizing so he can have a future with the woman he is coming to care for?
Whew! Talk about a keep you on the edge of your seat story! I LOVED Edge of Survival! Romantic Suspense is one of my favorite genres and Toni Anderson writes a quality story. I found Cameran, and even Daniel very easy to relate to as people which made this story compelling. The fact that Cameran is determined to live her life to the fullest, in spite of the fact that she has a disease that can easily turn deadly if she does not take care of herself properly, made me really admire her. As for Daniel, who has not had an inner demon or two that they have had to overcome? Reading about how he works to overcome his problems made me want to keep reading. Also, the love scenes are highly charged and emotional. Overall, the emotions along with the suspense of trying to stay one step ahead of a murderer are what drive this story and make it the compelling read that it is. Personally, I am going to be checking out this author’s backlist for more great reads. If you love stories that keep you on the edge of your seat, if you love seeing a killer get his comeuppance, and you have to have your romance too, then you will want to pick up a copy of Edge of Survival today!
