Judge Jackson Crain is a former District Attorney who always wished to be a detective, but the death of his young wife left him to raise his small daughter alone. A judge’s robes provide him with more regular hours and time to spend with his daughter, but he still dabbles in investigations of local crimes.
Joe Junior McBride is everyone’s favorite barber. Jackson’s daughter and Joe’s stepdaughter are best friends. He has a spoiled son who is nothing but trouble from his first marriage and a beautiful wife who tries to deal with the tension as best she can. Post Oak is such a small town that everyone knows what is going on, or do they?
A small town barber is murdered and his daughter is kidnapped shortly afterward. It is up to Judge Crain to find the killer and the young girl before she suffers the same fate. The town is full of secrets and a mysterious stranger who looks just like the deceased is sighted around town, often in the company of Jackson’s ladylove, Mandy.
Ms Bell writes a very good mystery. Set in a small Texas town with all of its prejudices, gossip and warmth, the reader discovers that not all is as it seems, even in such a setting. The characters are very well written and the reader will feel right at home in Post Oak. The mystery itself is not easy to solve. The author throws in unexpected twists and turns to confuse, making the mystery even better. This is a well-crafted small town mystery.
