Carmen Mendoza is a doctor in a clinic for the paranormal. She is an empath and half wolf. She cannot shift, but her family is not above making use of her for political reasons.
Alec is the unofficial Alpha Wolf of New Orleans. Scion of a very powerful family, he walked away from his birthright, but not his responsibilities. After the murder of his human wife, he swore never to let wolf politics control his life.
There is a power shift developing in the Wolf world. Carmen’s Uncle Cesar is getting ready to make a grab for what power he can get and has decided to arrange an advantageous marriage for her whether she wants it or not. Someone in the family has hired a witch to make her a wolf against her will and generally make her life miserable. She turns to Alec for help and he can never refuse a damsel in distress.
I love this book. The characters are vivid and the plot sucked me in by the end of the first page. I loved the author’s version of the world in general and New Orleans in particular. It is such an apt place for supernatural beings to gather. Carmen is a complex character who has a really bizarre family dynamic. She was abandoned by a father who still wants to control her life. Fortunately for Alec, his family is too afraid to try to control him anymore. The author is a master at writing suspense, action and love scenes, so there is something for everyone in this book.
