Stepping off the shuttle and into Le Pont de Rêves is quite literally worlds away from Detective Sebastian Thorpe-Campbell’s regular hunting grounds. This moon and colony hosts the most exclusive beauty contest in all of the galaxies, and for a working guy like him, it is a step into another dimension.
One look at his surroundings and Detective Gerard Rappeneau is in heaven. The women are extraordinarily beautiful, the scenery is lush and exotic, and with a really good mystery to sink his teeth into, it is more than any man could hope for.
After taking a few minutes to stomp on each other’s toes, Sebastian and Gerry find a common ground on which they can work. It seems they were brought here intentionally to solve the attempted murder of one of the Selene contestants, but not for the reasons they first assume. Gerry’s attraction to Selene contestant Evelyn, and Sebastian’s to Claire gives them plenty of incentive to discover the real rats behind the attack, and what they uncover is a completely different breed of animal. The whole debacle of the Selene contest creates one huge roadblock after another for the detectives, but now it is their hearts on the line as well as their badges.
Queen’s English coming from a couple of randy dandies is quite the combination for two unlikely heroes. Sebastian and Gerry are, on the outside, like night and day, but underneath they are just two decent guys with family legacies they feel they have no chance of living up to. However, they do have their hearts are in the right place, and you have to admire their attempts at chivalry. A murder attempt, top-secret science experiment, and a corrupt mining company are, in my opinion, too many irons in the fire for one story, but it sure does keep you guessing.
