John Hamdon has seen great tragedy in his lifetime, but he has not let it get him down. He is a cop, and a protector of others, a personality trait he cannot seem to help.
Rene Bast is also a cop, but he is something else as well, something that is outside John’s experience, that is until their paths cross for the first time
When John’s girlfriend threatens to commit suicide, instead of calling 911, John attempts to get to her before she can do the deed. Unfortunately, he does not make it there in time and instead ends up hitting what he thinks is a dog with his car. The car behind him hits his car so hard the airbag deploys. Injured, he still manages to get out of his car and look for the dog he is sure he hit. When he goes down to look under his car, he does not find the dog, but instead a beautiful young man who then promptly turns into not a dog, but a wolf. At least that is what he is sure he sees initially. Imagine his surprise when what he is sure is the same beautiful young man shows up at his precinct and turns out to be the new detective. The murder of a local crime boss by a dog convinces John that his new partner is the murderer, especially since he is convinced he saw the man turn into a wolf. But things are not always what they seem, and while these two work at cross purposes, they also are extremely sexually attracted to each other. Will their mutual secrets, including one John is not even aware of himself keep them from being together, or will they solve the riddle before it is too late?
Whew! What a ride! My initial reaction to this book was, “dang would the author just get on with it!” because it just felt too slow to me in the beginning. However, as I kept reading, tiny clues to the pieces of the huge jigsaw story this book is became apparent, and it was just enough to keep me reading. Half-way through I was totally hooked! While many of the incidents do not seem to make sense, if you keep reading the story comes together in the most delightful way. I found this book to be one of the best paranormal romantic suspense stories I have ever had the pleasure to read. If you enjoy stories that you cannot figure out who the bad guy is, and where the sexual tension is so thick you can cut it with a knife, then you do not want to miss Chasing Shadows. As I said, I am totally hooked now and will most definitely be getting the rest of this author’s books. Jez Morrow is a master storyteller, and well worth adding to any reader’s TBR pile!
