Athena Smith is trying to set up a scholarship fund through the museum she works at. Thanks to some priceless gowns that are to be on display, she just might get the goal she set out to get.

Drew Clayworth knows he has a reputation as a playboy. As one of the infamous Clayworth men, he is rich, suave, and a bachelor which is just how he likes it.

Something happens to Athena when she is inspecting the famous dresses and she wakes up in the hospital. Drew is terrified when he first hears that his ex-best friend is harmed, but not because of a lawsuit. Trying to get to the bottom of things, he orders the dresses to be brought in for testing only to find out someone has stolen them. Now he and Athena must put their torrid past behind them and work together as they search for the dresses, especially considering they are full of toxins that make people do unbelievable things.

Black Tie Affair has a good storyline idea, but it was a little hard for me to get into it. Sherrill Bodine did have good conflicts within the plot, particularly with the two characters' pasts as well as what happened to Athena’s dad. I thought the whole toxic dresses were inspirational, notably because of the note at the end of the novel where the author explains how she came up with the idea. This was a good story, one that I might recommend to certain people. If you like fashion, romance, mysterious toxins, erratic and funny behavior coming from otherwise staid people, and two people who are meant to be together then you probably will enjoy reading this novel.
