Katherine is an orphan with no funds of her own. She is slight and beautiful with red hair. She is devoted to her beloved Aunt Maude and hopes to have a love match like hers.
Jonathan is a doctor and in England with his cousin. He is tall, dark, handsome and honorable, the opposite of his cousin, Simon.
Simon has been ordered by his grandfather to give up the love of his life and find an English bride. He buys Katherine from her guardian with every intention of getting rid of her as soon as possible, but Katherine is tougher than she looks. She also has a protector of sorts in Simon’s handsome cousin, Jonathan. Her new life in the New World could be an adventure or a disaster.
Katherine is an interesting character who seems to attract the worst collection of males known to man. To give her credit, she bounces back from disaster after disaster. I liked how the author arranged for her to start each new phase of her life in a very different setting. She does a good job of contrasting them from England, to the South, and finally to New York. The plot itself is a bit melodramatic with too many near rapes and evil male characters. Even the hero is less honorable than he should be. Overall, it is an interesting and entertaining tale with interesting settings and vivid characters.
