All of her life Katherine Westbrook has wanted one thing; to marry well and take her rightful place in society. Someone of her breeding, poise, and beauty should not be relegated to a life of mediocrity.
With little hope of his family name ever being what it once was, Nicholas Blackshear nevertheless works tirelessly to build his reputation as a top-notch barrister. He is much too busy to waste time worrying about attending parties and meeting young women.
To re-establish her family's name and secure a successful future for her younger sisters, Kate is desperate to marry a titled man. As much as she enjoys Nick's company when he visits her father, Kate is well aware he can never meet her needs. Their longstanding friendship has Nick overstepping boundaries with Kate, although he too knows they do not suit. Kate wants something Nick will never be able to provide, even though her heart begs her to reconsider.
It is very easy to mistake Kate for shallow and cold hearted, but rest-assured she is more than just a pretty face. Even if her drive to become a lady of the ton is often off-putting, it is the only thing she can think of that will elevate her sibling's status in society. Sadly, Nick too suffers from this need to distance himself from disgraced family to find his place among political leaders. It is when their paths veer off course and their relationship takes on a whole new element that I find this storyline really strikes at the heart.
