Jillian Leigh’'s academically minded parents raised her to be an independent woman; an anomaly in 1920’s Britain. While studying at Oxford, Jillian receives notice that her uncle has died after falling from a cliff. It is left to her to travel to the seaside village of Rothewell to identify her uncle’'s body and pack up his belongings.
Almost immediately, Jillian finds herself embroiled in her uncle’'s dubious work as she searches for answers about his death. As a ghost hunter, it is almost certain that Uncle Toby came to Rothewell searching for a spirit. What remains to be seen is whether or not the two hundred year old ghost of Walking John is somehow responsible for Toby’'s plunge from the cliff.
When Jillian meets Inspector Drew Merriken of Scotland Yard, she is drawn even deeper into the search for truth. As danger escalates, Jillian finds herself irresistibly drawn to Drew. Soon it becomes impossible to tell if the threat comes from beyond the grave or from deep within the tiny town’'s closely held secrets.
Readers will almost certainly fall in love with Jillian Leigh. No book could have asked for a more tenacious heroine, or a hero so perfectly suited to her. The story is deliciously creepy with twists and turns that will keep you up late at night. Though somewhat slow at the beginning, it is well worth waiting for things to get moving.
