A DECADE OF LONGING

Angelica Burgens long ago gave up any girlish dreams of love and desire. Wedded to a man who is empowered by hitting her and who makes no attempt to make her feel like a woman, she is dismayed when her first love, Alex, reappears in her life. He betrayed her, by her estimation, long ago. By returning, he can bring her nothing but further woe, but can she resist the temptation of his touch?
Alexander Adalsteinn has returned with a fortune and a fake name to reclaim the one woman he ever loved. But finding her married and telling him in no uncertain terms to leave her alone, he finds he must plot a new course to win back her love. He can see in her eyes that his Angel still lives, still desires him, but how to get her away from the husband she is stuck with?
Together they begin a tumultuous journey into passion and love rekindled, but secrets from their past must first be uncovered and revealed before Angelica can again trust Alex. And then, if she does dare trust him with her heart and body, which are aching for him, are darker forces still intent on seeing them kept apart?
Ms Valey kept this from being a typical historical romance insofar as the external conflicts that Alex and his Angel faced were pretty dire all the way through the book. Angelica’s husband was clearly not a likeable guy and had no redeeming qualities, so it was super easy to hate him and cheer for the couple who went behind his back to meet. However, with that conflict and the past that haunted this couple, I would have liked to see a bit more of the emotional damages that the leads would surely have suffered at the hands of all this chaos. Still a very steamy read with a very edge-of-your-seat plot and an author that I will keep an eye out for in the future.
