Susana Martinez-Acosta tries to make ends meet as she raises her eight-year-old son, Marco. She often wonders if her dear, departed Javier would think she is doing a good job.
Ray Johnson is a detective who does not always enjoy finding dead bodies then reporting the sad news to the families. Then there is Deborah, his partner, who is often a thorn in his side.
Susana draws on Javier’s Social Security and the firefighter’s fund, but even working at the hotline center she worries she isn’t doing enough for Marco, her son. With Javier so much in her thoughts she wonders if she will ever have a relationship with Ray. Susana is the only woman Ray desires. Yet there are times he feels as if he cannot live up to his father’s expectations or even walk in Javier’s shoes. He often feels like he is fighting a losing battle with Susana. When another body is found dead, can he put his life on hold long enough to find a way to make a future with Susana? Will she be able to put her past aside and start a new beginning, or will her late husband always been in the picture?
A Deadly Wilderness is a tension-packed read. I thought the pressure between Ray and Deborah was woven well into the story. Incorporating Susana, and her past life with her deceased husband is a part of life to which many readers can relate. Watching Susana grow in her relationship with Ray was indeed worth the read to see the struggles they each endured and how they were able to conquer their fears in the long run. Kelly Irvin incorporates life-like players with real situations that add some romantic suspense as she explores an unforgettable journey among friends and enemies in this forceful read.
