Sister Margaret Ann Pahl, devout nun of the Sisters of Mercy, is an unlikely murder victim. She is seventy one years old, growing deaf, and approaching retirement.

Father Gerald Robinson is the chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He never lived up to his potential and at fifty-two this is the only time he has been pastor of any congregation.

The author examines the 1980 murder of a nun found in the sacristy of a hospital chapel in Ohio and the priest convicted of the murder and accused of many other heinous crimes including rape, sodomy, and satanic rituals. The priest was convicted in 2006 and is now in prison.

Before I start, I have to say that I am not a fan of this genre. I do occasionally read true crime but rarely finish the book. This is a pretty well written account of the crime and it’s principals and has the added bonus of being topical; another evil priest, but there is a little too much of that on the market just now. The author is very thorough, and this is a gruesome tale with details that are definitely not for the faint of heart. It is interesting to read how Robinson almost got away with murder and the depths to which he sunk in later years. Even though this is not something I would usually read, I found myself interested and read it from cover to cover.
