Isabella, Lady Willoughby, is a respectable lady of the ton. She dresses quietly and guides young people in society. The highlight of her life is playing chess with her old friend, the dashing Marcus, Lord Roth, who sees her just as his childhood friend.
Marcus, Lord Roth, is active before and behind the scenes in the political arena and has many enemies. He also has a physical problem and fears that his headaches will progress like his father’s and he does not want to pass that on to future generations.
Lord Roth’s secret dealings in the political arena could lead to serious consequences to those he cares about. Isabella’s desire to catch his attention has caught someone much more unsavory’s notice.
The romance between the two main characters is very involving and has some pretty well written love scenes. Isabella is a great character quietly blossoming in her pursuit of the elusive Marcus. The author describes England of the period very well and the descriptions of the ton and its pursuits are excellent. The supporting characters add much to the story and are very vivid. I particularly liked Calliope and Bertie. The villains are also well done, evil, but believable in society. The author also provided quite a bit of suspense and action in addition to the love scenes. I really enjoyed this one, despite the end, and recommend it.
