Carla Matteo has recently taken a break from her job at Matteo Rubbish Removal. She and her husband, Joe, started the business shortly after their marriage and Carla is ready for a break.
Scents are like a drug to Carla. She takes particular care in both buying and wearing her perfumes. She finds that every memory and situation can be brought forth by a certain smell.
When Alice moves in next door to the Matteo’s, Carla welcomes her to the neighborhood, but does not plan on spending time with the newcomer. Just the name Alice brings back bad memories of her childhood friend also named Alice, who took a bad turn. Carla must confront her guilt over Alice and the mystery of her father’s death and move on to the next step in her life. She discovers a website for scent aficionados and enjoys writing reviews of perfumes as well as corresponding with a new friend in Australia.
Underlying Notes is a light and fun read. Lusciously described, the scents mentioned in this novel take on a life of their own. I could almost smell rose-filled air as I was reading. The characters are diverse, yet complimentary to the underlying notes of Carla’s life. The reader can easily be sucked into small town Rhode Island. Written in the first person, Ms. Pasco has the gift of beautiful prose that is a joy to read.
