Rona Shively is a private investigator living in Las Vegas. Other than her anemic finances, things are going pretty good right now. Something has to go wrong.
Sally Jacoby is missing. She was out on a boat with her husband and disappeared overboard and is presumed dead. Mark is the prime suspect but there is nothing to indicate foul play.
Rona is hired by the missing woman’s brother to find evidence to convict the husband. At the same time Rona’s sister flies out to see her fleeing her marriage, Norm goes out of town with his new and attractive assistant, and Rona’s ex is out of jail and accused of murder. This is all in a days work for Rona.
This mystery is fun but a bit overdone. Everything is just a little bit exaggerated. She is living on the edge of bankruptcy, and can barely make the rent on her office, but eats out all the time and has money for rent on her apartment. Her ex talks about his friends in jail dropping like flies; that just does not happen without a federal investigation. I liked the characters, but the plot just does not come together for me. There are not enough clues to solve the mystery without the author’s conclusions. I liked Rona and her sister, and Trey was a confusing but attractive character. I could not figure out Rona’s attraction to the used car salesman, but the plot situations could be exciting, the dialogue was fast paced and amusing. This author writes humor very well and with a few more clues the mystery would be just as good.
