Ronan Marino is an ex Air Force Major and part-time P.I. Due to a win in the California Lottery, he can afford not to work, and has moved back home to Lowell, Massachusetts. Everything seems to be going well for him, until his girlfriend turns up dead and full of drugs in the river.

Karen was a waitress and college student. When she is found dead, Ronan also finds that she had an unusually large savings account for a struggling student. Apparently Karen has been moonlighting as an escort. Until her murder, that is.

A beautiful young college student is found dead in the river, apparently an accidental overdose. Ronan Marino, with the help of his police chief brother and mob boss uncle, is determined to find the killer. Inept detectives, crooked politicians, and rival mobsters hamper his investigation.

This story is going to please fans of hard-boiled detective fiction. Ronan is very much that type. Although he is in love with the victim, he seems to have his eye on every half-attractive woman he comes across. In spite of the non-P.C. hero, there is a good mystery here and I found myself getting into the story.
