Liling Harper has a secret. One that she wants to keep hidden from the world. She has finally made a life for herself. Although she stays in one place for only a year, she actually likes what she does in Chicago. She is good at growing things and ends up with her picture in the paper. The picture shows her tattoo and she knows she must leave immediately. When the man she fantasizes about offers her help, she accepts, never knowing just how much danger she will bring to his doorstep.

Valentin Jaus is a Darkyn lord. He has lost the only woman he has ever loved and now faces a lonely life, still loving her from afar. He sees Liling often when she visits his friend Louisa and is intrigued by her. When he senses she is in trouble he knows he will do whatever it takes to protect her. But will she be able to handle the truth about who and what he is?

Valentin and Liling board his private jet, not knowing that his regular pilot has been murdered. When Valentin learns this, he confronts the man, only to realize the man is Brethren, one of those bent on destroying his kind. Yet it is not Valentin the man has come to kill, but Liling. Valentin heals her after she is shot and saves her when their plane crashes. Liling tells him a partial truth of what she can do and he trusts her enough to tell her he is Darkyn. Although their love is growing, it will take only one man to destroy it, her brother.

Ms. Viehl spins a wonderful and exciting tale with her latest edition of The Darkyn. Her characters are wonderfully written, having both alpha qualities and softer sides. When they find love, it is forever. Ms. Viehl has created a world that is completely believable. I have read this series from the beginning and this story did not let me down. It drew me in, keeping me turning pages until I was finished. If you want a unique tale, not of vampires but of vrykolakas, then this is a series for you.
