Kate Dennison is a divorced mother. She is just restarting her career as a journalist with a small weekly paper. Her nitpicking ex does not approve, but he does not have to and she is very happy with her choices right now.
Nine years ago Bryan was in love with Kate, but too immature to commit. He thought that she would always be there, but she moved on, got married, and had a child. Now that she is free again, he is not going to let her go.
A deadly fire kills a popular real estate agent and a wealthy environmentalist. Suspicion falls upon a radical group, the Forces of Nature, and a young man who identifies with them. Kate Dennison is a local reporter covering the story, but this story could cost her her daughter, her life, and her job.
I really enjoyed this story. I can identify with the setting, a shore community being destroyed by greedy developers and sympathize with the environmentalists. The developer is loud, ignorant and greedy, a perfect bad guy. The FON is an interesting group too, burning down properties to stop development. The author has really pulled these elements together with some very good main characters to make an engrossing mystery that I had a really hard time putting down. The subplots of Kate and Bryan reconnecting after nine years, and the ex Keith’s new relationship really enhanced the story and provided insight into the characters. Kate’s night in jail was described very well also, typical of this story. The combination of the great characters, excellent and exciting plot, and a little bit of romance makes this a book I definitely recommend.
