Web designer Andie Kendricks is a disappointment to her society maven mother. She always wanted Andie to be like her best friend’s daughter, Miranda. Andie may be a bit scruffy, but she is happy with her life and her boyfriend Brian Malone.
Miranda DuBois has it all on the surface. The former Miss Texas comes from a wealthy family with an adoring mother; she has any beauty queen’s dream job as a television anchor, and a wealthy and handsome man in love with her. Trying to improve on perfection, she has a little work done, that goes disastrously wrong.
When former beauty queen turned news anchor Miranda Dubois’ plastic surgery goes wrong, she decides to get her revenge on Dr. Sonja and the “pretty parties” she uses to drum up business. She shows up at Delaney Armstrong’s party totally drunk with a gun and commits assault on a Picasso. The next morning she is dead, an apparent suicide, but Andie and her mother do not believe she would kill herself.
Ms. McBride has scored another hit with this addition to her “Debutante Dropout” series. Andie is in her usual inquisitively quirky form, roped into the investigation by her mother. Despite the fact that her mother seems to like the dead Miranda better than her own daughter, Andie agrees to help investigate. Her buddy Janet is at her side, causing trouble and trying to save her job at the paper. Her trip to the good doctor has pretty funny results. Between Miranda’s secret affair, her membership in a clandestine sex club, and the plastic surgery, there are more than enough people who would like her dead and you might be surprised to find out who. The private investigator Milton Fletcher is an interesting addition to the cast of characters, and Cissy is in rare form. This is a great mystery with some really funny moments.
