Sylvie Penrith fled to Paris after a disappointment in love and a blowup with her controlling grandmother. She vowed never to return to Penhallow and has found a great job and shares a flat with her best friend. Her beloved Uncle Nick is getting married, which will force her to go home again.
Rafe Wilde had to acquire more shares of the family company for a controlling interest. Christine Penrith has what he needs, but wants him to marry her granddaughter in exchange. His first marriage was a disaster he never wants to repeat, and Sylvie is definitely not the kind of woman you marry.
Two headstrong people determined not to fall in love find that it is not so easy to overcome strong emotions. Misunderstandings and jealousy make things very difficult for both of them.
I found myself engrossed in this story from the first chapter. Rafe is a little unlikable at first. He is very driven and determined to get his own way. Sylvie was hurt very badly by both her grandmother and the man she was involved with. Paul took advantage of a naïve girl and Sylvie paid the price. Cornel Wilde takes a fatherly interest in her and she really blooms in her job as his P.A. Rafe is at first suspicious and jealous of Sylvie and her relationship with his uncle. This becomes a common thread in the story even as their relationship develops adding interest to the love story. A crisis with his ex-wife and daughter also interferes with their romance. Sylvie is a great character, a little naïve, but strong and independent. Rafe is strong and very alpha. Sylvie’s uncle and grandmother, as well as Cornel are very vivid characters. I just could not put this story down.
