Melody Ann Croft was once a suburban New Jersey girl waiting tables to earn money for college. She is now known as Mac, and she is starting to take the modeling world by storm.
Jade Bishop has been in the modeling business since she was a child, supporting her mother even now. It is becoming apparent that she is never going to be a supermodel, and she is starting to drown her insecurities in alcohol and drugs.
This Year’s Model is the story of Melody Ann Croft and her experience as a new model in the high powered and high stress world of fashion. Her unlikely friendship with fellow model, Jade Bishop, and her crush on overnight sensation, Duncan Shiloh, make the eighteen year old grow up fast, hopefully without losing the morals and values that make her the person she is.
This is an interesting and entertaining look at the modeling world through the eyes of a newcomer. Mac is a strong personality with firm values and a lot of naivety. Jade is her complete opposite in both looks and personality. She has a bit of a love/hate relationship with Mac. Mac is on her way up in the modeling world, and Jade is at a standstill and about to head downward. Mac grows up a lot in the course of the story and the subplots of her almost-romance with Duncan and Jade’s with rocker, Roman, add a lot to the story. I loved the descriptions of the shoots and fashion shows, and the author’s insider knowledge of the industry really shows. She describes the industry with all of its good sides and bad sides making the faces on the covers of your favorite magazines into real people with real lives and problems.
