Sarah was a doctor. Now she is a vagabond on a perpetual holiday, but not enjoying much of it. She has lost confidence in her abilities and does not know what to do with her life. She feels guilty that she did not diagnose her late husband’s melanoma or insist that her former fiancé get treatment for his leukemia, so she avoids all relationships.
Mike was a military surgeon until a landmine took part of his leg. His fiancée did not deal well with his injury and he feels guilty about the loss of his men. He is now a doctor on a cruise ship, happy to deal with overeaters, sunburn, and seasickness.
Two doctors, battered by life, find each other on a cruise ship. The romantic setting goes a long way towards breaking down the walls each has put up, but an outbreak of a mysterious disease makes them realize just how much they mean to each other.
This is a fast read. The setting of a two-week cruise sets the pace for this unusual shipboard romance, where the two main characters spend more time avoiding love than making it. They are pretty damaged psychologically and suffer from intense guilt, which makes their characters more interesting than in the usual holiday romance. The setting suits the story well. Mike and Sarah have nowhere else to go, so they are forced to see each other again and again. They even meet on a shore excursion with dramatic results. The Purple Hat Ladies, most notably Martha, were a wonderful addition to the story, which I really enjoyed.
