Sallie at one time thought that she was the luckiest woman in the world. But then when her husband walked out on her she found her solace in her work. After three years, she is not sure how she feels about him.
Stephen was devastated by the diagnosis of testicular cancer. He has always wanted a family with his beloved wife Sallie, but despite the doctor’s assurances, he feels that he has lost that, so he leaves. For three years, he was too scared to come back.
When the local owner of the physician’s office wants to retire, he asks a former employee to come back and take over the partnership with his estranged wife, in an attempt to reunite the couple.
Sallie and Steve manage to overcome Steve’s selfish abandonment of three years before, but not without many ups and downs. Frankly, I thought that he was very lucky, and evidently so does he. Sallie is by no means a martyr in this story, but she does let him off a little too easily. The people of the village, particularly the severely ill farmer Phillip, are well written. Some are quirky and some are struggling, just like small town life in the real world. Steve’s nephew Liam is a good device to bring the two together and helps make this story believable.
