THE THORAZINE MIRRORBALL
Wild Child Publishing
Rating: 5 cups
Jimmy Mack is a musician who suffers from anxiety and depression. He has just been released from a mental institution where he spent most of his time doped up on Thorazine. When he is finally released he has huge gaps in his memory from the drugs and electric shock treatment he received while there.
Tommy “Laid” Laidlaw is a recovering junkie and friend of Jimmy’s. He is also the man who gets Jimmy most of his gigs. When Laid cannot take an out of town gig, he volunteers Jimmy to go instead.
However, Jimmy is not there long before dead bodies start turning up. When Yvonne seduces Jimmy, he has no idea why until he wakes up to find another body. Clearly being framed for crimes he did not commit and yet terrified because he has gaps in his memory, Jimmy runs. When his mind finally clears, and he begins putting the pieces together, he knows he has to find some way to clear his name. Unsure who is friend and who is foe, Jimmy goes on the hunt for a killer.
At first I thought I would not like this book. However, I’m here to say that within the first twenty pages I was hooked! The author has a clear understanding of mental illness, and writes about it through Jimmy’s eyes with compassion. This gives Jimmy a unique and realistic voice. The suspense is gripping, and Mr. Maeby uses it to move along the story like a pro. The secondary characters keep the flow of the story smooth, and are well defined. The action scenes are superbly written, and kept me on the edge of my seat. This is a fantastic read that I wholeheartedly recommend!
