THE TEMPTATION OF THE NIGHT JASMINE

Rating: 4 cups
A quiet young woman, Lady Charlotte Landsdowne, lives with her grandmother, the Dowager Duchess, at the ducal estate of Girdings in Norfolk, England. Lady Charlotte spends most of her days reading and fantasizing of her knight in shining armor. When he finally arrives, he is not quite the man she expects him to be.
Sir Robert Landsdowne, Duke of Dovedale, returns from India on a mission of honor. His mentor, Colonel Arbuthnot, was killed in the field of battle by a traitor, and Sir Robert promised to find his killer. He arrives at his estate to find his little cousin, Charlotte, grown and quite desirable.
Arriving in England, Sir Robert is not expecting the reception he receives, but it will make his mission a bit easier. He needs to befriend some men whom he would rather not call ‘friend’ in order to gain access to the Hellfire Club, a group of spoiled rich boys who partake in some of the more sinful sides of life. Lady Charlotte is on a mission of her own when the King falls ill. Things do not seem right to her, and she begins to investigate, only to find her mission is intertwined with Sir Robert’s.
From beginning to end, the twists and turns this story took kept me enthralled. Ms. Willig changes from modern day to historical times with such ease. Lady Charlotte is easily a character to identify with. She does not realize her own strength until it is needed by those she loves. Filled to the brim with humor, romance and history, this author wins another reader over. While it is part of an ongoing series, it is not necessary to start with the first book.
