Fawn Bluefield is on her way to her new home with her new husband. She does not know what to expect from his family and is not prepared for the greeting she receives. She also is not expecting to have no place to call home her first night in Dag's camp. But she is determined to make the best of it and to win her new in-law's over. What will happen to her when Dag goes back on patrol?
Dag Redwing Hickory did not think he would bring home a wife and especially not a farmer's daughter. He is not sure of his family's reaction but finds out as soon as they enter his camp. Dag expected there would be outrage but not to the extent he was witnessing. How will he get his family and friends to agree that the marriage is binding?
Dag's brother is threatening to go to the camp council to enforce a string cutting and his mother has banished him from the family tent. Now Dag has been called out to an emergency patrol and has to leave Fawn behind to deal with the fall out of their marriage alone. But the malice they are after is cunning and has transformed into a powerful being. When Dag is injured Fawn feels it through their bond and goes with a group of patrollers to help him. Upon their return to camp, they are summoned to the council to find out their fate. Will the camp council and Dag's family succeed in tearing them apart or will they be allowed to stay together?
This was a hard book for me to read. It is definitely wise for anyone who reads this book to have read the first one as well as this book does not give back story or flashes from the first. I did find the characters charming and at times witty. Ms. Bujold is an excellent storyteller to say the least and I am certain I will read the first book. Overall it was a well thought out plot and the characters are well written.
