Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn was not looking forward to retirement. But now that it has finally happened, well he knows he has to do something. A case he had worked on years before begins to bug him when an old friend sends a picture from a home decorating magazine. With nothing better to do with his time, he goes in search of answers.

Jason Delos seems to have everything. A beautiful home, a personal assistant, hobbies, lots of money and most importantly, the missing piece of Leaphorn's investigation all those years ago. He, like a lot of people, has more to lose if Leaphorn continues digging around and asking questions. What is a man like him supposed to do in a situation like that? Take care of the problem of course.

When Mel Bork sends Leaphorn the picture of the rug that was supposedly destroyed in a fire it starts Leaphorn to thinking about the day it happened. There were too many questions left unanswered and now he wants to find those answers. But when Bork disappears after leaving Delos's home, Leaphorn must go there himself. Along the way he runs into old friends and walks away with more questions instead of answers. Somehow all the pieces in this puzzle must fit together, he just does not know how.

I loved this book. Mr. Hillerman takes his readers on an amazing thrill-ride. The many twists and turns kept me hanging on every word, dying to get to the next page. The calmness of Leaphorn's character often left me smiling. The secondary characters add flair and life to the story that most suspense books I have read do not have. Mr. Hillerman definitely knows how to bring suspense to a story and leave the reader breathless by the end of the book. I will be keeping this book close at hand to read again and get lost in the adventure of Joe Leaphorn.
