Joanna Archer should be dead instead of prowling the sunset strip at night, but a shift in destiny altered for her. On a blind date arranged by sister, Olivia, things heat up.

Ajax Sand seems to know much about Joanna. He is like a hound ready for the chase and he enjoys killing the innocent.

Warren is able to help Joanna while pretending to be homeless.

Joanna did not think he looked dangerous but one had to be careful especially on a blind date. She imagined him handsome, not someone who looked like Ichabod Crane in a poorly knitted suit. Mr. Sand, who informs his first name is Ajax, like the Greek warrior can scent her and she smells like the desert sage in full bloom after a summer storm. Joanna is in awe of the stirring events and words that he proclaims and would like nothing better than to leave. She is glad when she is able to escape his presence. While driving her car, Joanna does not see the figure in front of her when she slams on her brakes, but for some reason, even a jolt with a car, and he heals quickly. His name is Warren and he is commander leader of Zodiac Troop 175, division of anti-evil, of Las Vegas and is a good guy like Joanna. She believes that he has really injured himself but soon learns that he is telling the truth. Just when Joanna thought she was out of the way of anyone doing her harm, her sister, Olivia falls victim to a terrible tragedy when someone breaks into her apartment believing that it is Joanna they have killed. With the help of Warren, she becomes a part of the group that protects the shadowy figures of Las Vegas who seek to do harm. When Joanna meets with the others in their realm, she soon learns that mistrust is a big issue with some of them because of her combination of light and shadow. With the loss of Olivia, Joanna will do everything in her powers to save those most important to her from the shadow zodiac, as powerful forces seek to make her part of them.

The Scent of Shadows is an amazing tale of strength. Joanna makes a great superhero to those around her and when she loses her sister, Olivia, the agonizing pain is visible on her facial expression of the deep hurt she feels. She is someone that the reader cheers for all the way to the end of the book. Vicki Pettersson creates unbelievable characters that leap from the pages as the story unfolds with many roller coaster spins that make this a page-turner. Warren, and the other characters, blends in wonderfully to make this one fantastic read. The first sign of the zodiac is only the beginning as the reader waits patiently for Ms. Pettersson to finish more of her excellent works. She lets her voice roar in this great novel!
