Detective Peter Decker of the LAPD, would rather be working homicide then on the present case. After a woman in the yeshiva community, is cruelly attacked and raped, it draws him into a different life. He must find the attacker before he strikes again.

Rina Lazarus, a Jewish teacher, lives in the sheltered community of the yeshiva. She is a witness after her friend is attacked and plans to help Decker find the person responsible for the harsh crime.

Decker is shocked over the recent report. A woman has been targeted after returning from the mikvah, after her ritual cleansing in the bathhouse. Some people held much animosity toward the Jews and the place had been hit many times by vandals but never once had it be victimized by any violence as this. He takes his partner, Marge Dunn with him for the investigation. Rape cases bother Marge but she keeps her composure. Rina was grading papers when she heard the commotion and Sarah’s screams. When the detectives arrive on the scene, she urges them to go easy on Sarah; the attack was most horrific. Rina tells them Susan is a lovely wife and mother. Decker is glad for the help that Rina enlists. She is calm, and with her help, they are able to keep certain individuals under suspicion. He hopes to find the culprit before another occurrence happens. Rina lives in the sheltered community and is not afraid to speak to him about the crime. In time, Decker feels closer to Rina. He wonders if a strong religious woman could ever connect with a hard-nose cop. Until the case is solved, he will never know the answer and this is one case that is tough.

The Ritual Bath carries the reader into a community with a different set of rituals and way of life. I found the story very interesting in all aspects. I like the way Decker finds a love interest with Rina. I had not read this mystery book first, and was not certain how the two actually connected when I read the other books in the series, and this book allows the beginning of their relationship to blossom. Rina and Decker show a strong link with the one other. Even though the emotions are in check, the reader gets a feel of what really lies within their heart. Faye Kellerman has a way of allowing the reader to connect with the likeable characters. She knows her stuff when it comes to mystery, suspense, and capturing her audience in this excellent read.
