Olivia Cole has had to suffer many abuses to her pride and her person in her life, so she is not surprised but disappointed when her brother uses her as his marker to the owner of a gaming hell.

Griffin, Lord Breckinridge is the owner of a gaming hell. He won it gambling and used it to recoup his family fortune after his father died in a duel. The members of the Ton assume that he killed his missing wife.

Alastair Cole’s unusual method of paying a gambling debt changes the lives of both his sister Olivia and the owner of the gambling hell. At first resentful of his unwanted guest, he soon becomes captivated by her courage and resilience, not to mention her uncommon beauty.

This story is interesting on many levels. First, there is a wonderful romance with two characters who are strong despite what the world and their families have thrown at them. The author has captured the period and the setting is one that other historical have only given a glimpse of. The inner workings of a gambling hell are really interesting and lead to some excellent situations. Olivia’s life is definitely not what you would expect for the only daughter of a respected man, her brother was much more fortunate, not that his character benefited at all, he is an extremely selfish and naïve man. There is quite a bit of excitement when Olivia’s past catches up to her at various times, and the ending is particularly satisfying. Fans of historical romance will find a lot to like about this very well written novel.
