Dr. Susan Tunis joins her husband, Greg, researching beached dolphins. Her research studies the long-term effects of sonar interference on cetacean species.

Dr. Lisa Cummings is a scientist. She works with Monk Kokkalis. They are sent to inspect the medical crisis that has bombarded the Indonesian Islands. Lisa wants to get out from under her ops director, Painter, to see if she can evaluate her life out of his shadow, while deep down Painter holds feelings for her and worries when she is away.

Susan, and her boat mechanic husband, Greg, along with her mentor, head to Java for a little trip, only to find something disturbing along the beach. Susan never expected to see any beached dolphins. She wonders if it is something other than a man-made sonar causing the problems. While diving deep into the water, she contracts an itch that could turn deadly. It appears a horrifying plague is to blame, an unstoppable horror bringing every human at risk. Lisa and Monk begin their research on the disease. They witness hundreds evacuated and turn the Mistress of the Seas, a huge luxury ship, into a make-shift hospital. Lisa's skill as a medical doctor comes in handy, while trying to understand the tragedy. Was it a toxic assault or a spill of hazardous chemicals by terrorists? Time seems to be running out to manage the epidemic.

The Judas Strain has numerous characters that keep the audience turning the pages. One minute they are enjoying some free time, then out of the blue tragedy strikes. There is a lot of action in this read, lending much thought to the reader, with a question, what if this really did happen? I could almost see the pandemonium and the shock of disturbing events on everyone's faces as time clicked away for answers. This daring, stimulating ride has the reader on the edge-of-their-seat. James Rollins creates a story with such huge magnitude the audience just sits spellbound. I could tell he put his whole being into the making of this book.
