As a Gold Warrior, Maen has achieved the highest rank afforded a man of the matriarchal Aza City. His loyalty to his Mistress and his City unwavering and unquestioned, the respect of the men he commands unsurpassed, Maen is the perfect soldier.
Dax, born of lower-class Remainder stock, has been given the opportunity to enter the prestigious world of The Household; to better his life, to become a soldier in the service of his Mistress and the City. But there is an undeniable fire within Dax, a firm will, a questioning spirit, any of which is considered punishable and even treasonous within this orderly world.
What attracts Maen to Dax also scandalizes him as Dax makes him question the authority and Life he has vowed to scrupulously uphold. A dangerous situation takes the two soldiers away from the City. Maen discovers what he has always known may be no more than an illusion, and what he feels for Dax may be more than admiration.
More than just a romantic tale, The Gold Warrior is an incredibly layered, well-rounded story of an almost communistic society and the indomitable human spirit within its illusion of order and perfection. Clare London writes these characters with sensitivity, understanding and vision. Maen is the mature man with the child-like perspective of the world he inhabits, while the young Dax has inate knowledge well beyond his years. Their love is messy and pure, their journey fascinating. I cannot wait for the follow-up book to dive back into this story.
