Celeste Temple is on a mission to destroy those who have done her wrong. With this in mind, she sets out to the St. Royale Hotel in hopes of killing one of her opponents, a woman who assigned Celeste’s own life to be forfeited.
Cardinal Chang is known as a dangerous man, an assassin who always gets the job done, no matter who pays. After losing a loved one to those he thought he could trust, Chang decides to take matters into his own hands and goes after those responsible.
As Chang and Celeste’s journeys take them to the same house, both will find themselves enveloped in a dangerous scientific experiment. As their friend Doctor Svenson joins the expedition, all three characters will come to think they are alone on this adventure and without help. When they finally meet up, it may already be too late. One of them will lose a loved one, one will have a loved one turn on them, and the other will find out they are dying with every breath that is taken.
Mr. Dahlquist’s novel was an intricate tale of mystery, experiments, and two-way mirrors that I could not understand. The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters Volume Two is part of a series, and I could tell it cannot be read as a standalone. Reading this book for me would be like starting a job without training and being expected to understand everything that is going on around me. The era this story took place was never specified and the descriptions of the times threw me for a loop; there was mention of petticoats and corsets, coaches and footmen, air travel and pistols; at one point I thought the time was a past century and the next I felt it was in the future. This novel to me was a contradiction, confusing, complicated, and so complex that I felt completely overwhelmed and just wanted to put the book down and walk away.
Caution: This tale contains explicit sex scenes and blood and gore.
