Elizabeth Hamilton is in town for one reason; to convince Andre Sullivan to donate bone marrow for her seriously ill brother Caleb Sullivan. Andre has recently been hospitalized for injuries from a fire and has amnesia, but it is not pity that draws Elizabeth to him.
Andre Sullivan no longer exists. His body now belongs to Sullivan Fouquet, the infamous privateer who used to live on the island. A voodoo spell has enabled him to return to exact revenge on the family of the man who destroyed his family, Lord Henry Sullivan.
The spirit of a pirate transmigrates to the body of a fire chief in the town of Magnolia Cove. He has sworn to have revenge on the man who destroyed the ones he loved. In the present day, a crazed arsonist will stop at nothing to find the spell that will grant him eternal life, and as a bonus, a pirate treasure.
Ms. Bruhn’s combination of action, suspense, and love with a paranormal twist make this a very enjoyable read. Despite the outrageous circumstances, the characters are very real with very human faults, especially Sully. The addition of a villain related to one of Sully’s crewmembers is a very clever touch. I enjoyed reading about Sully’s introduction to the modern world and the irony that he wanted revenge on a ten-year-old boy. Elizabeth can be a little too good to be true, but that type of character fits in well with this story. Overall, this book is a very pleasant escape, though it is over all too soon.
