Deep in the Alaskan wilderness, a set of events start a chain reaction that could lead to the end of the human world. Meanwhile, in the small town of Lodi, Ohio, Dylan Hughes deals with her three sons, an ex named Sam, and Mick Owens, Chief of police and her lover. Since childhood, Dylan has bounced between Mick and Sam, ultimately marrying Sam and bearing her 3 boys, but Mick has always been there. This time she has divorced Sam, finally leaving the door open for Mick who loves Dylan more than air.
Being Chief of Police means the world to Mick, but being with Dylan and her sons means everything to him. The townspeople look to Mick for guidance as he is honorable, quick thinking, and willing to do the unimaginable so that Lodi can survive. Mick finally has the family he has always wanted with Dylan and her boys, and nothing is going to change that. Mick refuses to believe some flu can destroy what they have together.
The flu is running rampant through the US and beyond. It is estimated over 80% of the world’s population will die, with children being hit the hardest. There is no cure, but the town of Lodi has not been hit yet, and they will rally together and do everything they can to keep their town safe. Chances are so slim for them, but what if they can stay germ free and survive?
The Flu is a riveting page-turner posing the possibilities of man’s ultimate self-destruction. We are shown the worst of mankind’s abilities, and the beauty of the human spirit. Strong characterization between Dylan, Mick, and others exhibit moments of extreme courage and nose snorting humor in dealing with the devastation surrounding them. Ms. Druga-Johnston has written a powerful, thought provoking thriller. Be very glad this is just a story.
