ABBY M. HUNTER
Rating: 3 Cups
Seventeen-year-old Ashley loves summers. Her loyalty and friendship with Conner has lasted more than three years. She wonders what will happen once he leaves for college. Ashley and Conner’s friendship has come a long way, until one night of passion changes everything. He feels that Ashley is naïve and can easily be persuaded to give into him. She wanted commitment but his tone suddenly changed afterward. In no time, he is with Ashley's long-time friend, Rebecca.
Erik Halstein, a foreign exchange student, dreams of being an Olympic hockey player. After Ashley sees Erik, her heart melts and she wishes she could be married to him. When Conner mentions that Erik wishes to date Ashley, she jumps at the chance; after all, Conner made it abundantly clear they have nothing together. Ashley feels sensations for Erik never felt with Conner but he will have to leave for Sweden soon and it saddens her. Erik struggles with past events that left him with some guilt. He hopes with Ashley, this time around things will work out better as the two forge a much stronger union.
The Exchange is a story of finding and losing love, friendships, and loyalties. Ashley is young and torn with many things in life. She gives herself too freely at times. I did not personally care for the way Conner treated her. Erik cares about people and is sincere when it comes to Ashley. Ms. Hunter instills a sweet blossoming romance between young people making serious choices. I liked the way she fashioned the deep emotions between Erik and Ashley making them believable. I thought it was an enjoyable read that had its moments.
